A separated subsystem is a counterpart term to Container Subsystem, and describes a subsystem that does not share a body within their larger system/headspace, but is still connected to each other and not the rest of the system through being physically closer together in headspace, having better communication, having split off of each other, or other reasons. Similarly to its counterpart term, it was coined by a system with DID but is not exclusive to those with DID. An alternative term to this term for traumagenic DID/OSDD-1 systems who want a term exclusive to such systems is bordered subsystem, coined by multiplemogai, who also designed the associated flag[1].

It may be used to mean the same thing as sector or layer by individual plurals, but may have a more specific meaning, as it can apply to the "first kind" of Dissociative Identity Disorder/Other Specified Dissociative Disorder subsystem, internal groups within one larger system[2].
